They finished up
filling the container full of oak rails for their chairs. The
Old
Man sat down with his nephew and said: "Most
people don't use machines the way I will be teaching you to use them. I
use to be an adviser to manufacturing firms. I was paid well
but I had an enormous
responsibility. I often flew in a private jet, where the coffee table
was worth more than all of the tables we made in the shop all last week. I
flew along with the industry brass, and spent most of my days in
meetings. We were busy
people, with tough jobs, and always on the move. Often we were showing
corporate clients the latest
machines, and setting them up with fancy programs to improve their
operations. Then the economy turned downward, and after
taking jobs in production shops, and being laid off a few
times, I took a big chance and started this shop and designed this furniture.

"Shawn,
being young and ill-advised, I didn't take things very serious. You are going
to grasp the real potential of machines much sooner. Just follow along in the next
few days. The purpose of machines needs to be presented
through a certain method in order to emphasize efficiency and quality. People are always careful not to change, or try something new. Sure, we
should not try new things without proven results first. We shouldn't
make changes just for the sake of change, but we can change a students
outlook sooner, and trying new methods is sometimes necessary.
Maybe that's where the artisan, or the "artificium" is
important.

TIP: Most table saws with a cast iron
(even most steel and aluminum) tables can become a precision machine.
Most table saws have two accurately milled miter slots. These slots hold a cut through the blade uniform and straight. These two slots enable a saw to become a precision tool. This means that an ordinary table saw, with a few simple
