News and happenings. Woodworking news and tools.

Newsweek
On his gonzo CNBC show "Mad Money," James Cramer flings stock picks with abandon, but, he say's.....You rail against credit cards and are a big proponent of thrift.  The recklessness with which people approach spending makes it very difficult to get rich. People will buy five DVDs from Disney instead of one share of Disney. They should do the opposite.  Well, another twist to his statement might be;  Some people will buy five tools or machines instead of the information about woodworking jigs, and how they help to make work smarter.

Building guitars
"I dabbled in trim carpentry for a while and started slowly buying my own shop tools," he said.
He made about six guitars while doing those other jobs, and finally decided two years ago, with the Larson brothers as his inspiration, that crafting these instruments was his calling.  "I've always connected with woodworking. This is what I'm supposed to be doing," he said.

ew technologies,
along with the Internet make available many unusual and often
useful tools and products. Until now, the problem with many machines and tools has been twofold. We
need many of these new tools, but are not always given the advice and instructions about how they are used.

"Manufacturing is the engine that drives American prosperity. It is as central to our economic
security as it is to our national security."

Now, with the help of new software and the internet, people can do what is important..... connect to the best of both worlds: the "tools, and the information" about how to use  their tools.  Our included e-books and manuals include an assortment of  really valuable insight very rarely matched.....woodworking and manufacturing.

New book...What's a jigmaker do?

The Minnie Cut jig includes a user-friendly manual on CD, along
with "The 50 Giants of Industry."  The manual explains the best, most error free technique available to grasp making box joints. The manual allows the table saw owner to master many similar techniques and operations once discovering how to making box joints correctly. NOTE: Mastering box joints often requires "unlearning" some things.  Like mentioned before, this method is described to reduce mistakes.  The Minnie Cut has been tweaked,  improved and it is found to be a time saving, waste saving technique, and when followed, results in a huge lesson in what machines can become.

Read some of the comments about the box joint jig
~Since 2001~
"Excellent product.  Super service.  Package great- thanks."
"Well designed and an excellent value!"
" The jig is good, but the info on the CD is what makes the
package great - thanks."

After practicing with a few projects, because all of the stumbling blocks have been removed, making
most box joints will become a much more natural process. That's what you want: not just quick, random hints and suggestions which might lead to frustration, and might not work. You need to discover an established, proper sequence, described in the manual to grasp everything correctly.  Again, making box joints requires a few precise moves, including the basic knowledge of using a micrometer or vernier caliper.  Then, once you establish, and stick with this sequence, and avoid shortcuts, you'll discover what puzzles many people.  Read the woodworking forums online, and you'll see where many people ask about box joints, and few people can explain to them fully how to make them effectively.  The manual explains how to make them more "automatically." The comments on many forums might  tell you that many people abandon the attempts at making them when they are really a necessary technique for a table saw owner to learn.  It almost makes everything else done on a table saw seem,  and become elementary.

Excuses
for  " not knowing" more.

Twenty years or so ago a friend lent me a new router.
He owned it for five years and never knew how
to use it.  It took him 20 years to call and ask if I had his
router that he lent me.  He said that he had never even got to
learn what the router will do.

That is the way it often is.

People have the tools, but procrastinate when it comes to
learning how useful they can be.  So, I thought I would
make a little list of reasons some people use to avoid the
shop.  Hopefully not for 20 years.

Here are some common excuses for avoiding
the wood shop....George

Table saws will run with less vibration and start smoother in
cold weather by using a power twist link belt below.  We use them
and they last as long as a standard V-belt.  You can buy them by
the foot at Rockler.  They are easily adjustable and are more
flexible than the standard, solid belts.  Your average 10in.
table saw takes about 48 inches, 4 feet.

Rockler.

More tips here; My table saw belt is broke.

I want to know more about
woodworking jigs
or
to try to
make things from wood.

The best table saw is needed to make anything.
Not really...Powermatic Artisan has a cast-iron tabletop
and ground  flatness. Read the reviews, most of them are
very good!  Often $700 - $800.00.
  At Amazon

Maybe I avoid the shop because I can't fix a table saw,
or  can't adjust a table saw.

My table saw blade is too chipped, or it is broken.  Try Rockler

I need a
wood shop idea,  try
A book about the woodshop.

My table saw blade is dull.  Their are places on
the net to send saw blades for sharpening.

I can't find hardwoods.  Try our list of
dealers for lumber and hardwoods.

I don't know how to use a Dado blade.

I need a carbide saw blade  Try Amazon.comn

Only top woodworkers make things. Not really,
only those who discover what might be
the best method  for gaging box joints.

I need tips about reducing mistakes, saving time,
preventing
rework, and saving hardwood

I'm a beginner, and I can't read a micrometer

I  can't read a  vernier caliper.

I need a better table saw!

How much a barrel?

Sure, some people will say anything for attention, but there is an oil executive who can see such $300 dollars a barrel for oil. No, it won't happen overnight, and at election time prices might come back down, but many Mascut 1.0 owners have another reason to considered making extra money with their machines out in the shop.

Ever since this website has been established  people have discovered exactly what is possible with a Mascut, when they turn their table saw into a production device. Some Americans may even be considering giving up their 100 mile drives to work, then  maybe use their self reliance skills to design and make furniture.

                                                                                                        Here's the scoop.
Matthew Simmons, chairman of Simmons & Co. International in Houston is a credible, insider voice with a hand on the oil pulse.  He said on Bloomberg back in 2007 that there is a likelihood that oil prices could reach as much as $300 a barrel because of obsolete (older)  refineries among other things. Some of Simmons other suggestions on major cable TV interviews also suggested that we allow people to work their own hours, or let people work when they want to, and or where they want to. Surely that is not too likely too soon for many people.  Sure, Mr. Simmons has an interest in higher oil prices, but he feels that it can get too high, to inefficient, and more harmful to the economy in general for people to have to drive hundreds of miles per week to get to work.  When people are paying twice as much for gas, they have an instant pay cut coming out of the gas tank alone. Then, driving too far means that it affords less time each day to earn more money by working   longer hours. So, this problem won't entirely go away until we solve some of the energy problems.

Suggestion?  Instead of cursing and frowning, some woodworkers have an advantage.  Learn to make furniture efficiently, and in higher volume.  Then, forget the 100-200 mile drives to work every day.  Sell the furniture through numerous methods.  In a couple of years, you might establish who knows what?  Sure, having your own business can be a huge responsibility, and risk is always a part of the scenario.  But, everyone is surely curious about the amount of costs that will be involved should some "worst case" oil increase really happen to materialize for any length of time.
