"The Northirst Student Overlooked"
By

Best of the INFO Outburst series....
Be one of the first to know...

Many people go the distance, building well organized shops,
never having discovered simple automation basics...

"Enterprise often begins with those who build a neat,
organized shop and unfortunately, they set their goals too short, failing to
practice the basics of automation and productivity."

For too many, owning a shop full of machines is a short lived hobby, like
owning a mine, covering the entrance and never knowing its full potential.

The Old Man told Shawn...."Learn to create a surplus...Then
we can make it through many of these changes that effect everyone."  As for
Old Ben out in the shop, we have to take it upon ourselves to take care of
the old guy, he's depending on our spark of ideas and productivity.

You need to read..."The Northirst Student Overlooked"

because many novice crafters, enthusiasts, and woodworkers in general go the distance, building
well organized shops, never having discovered some primary, original automation concepts.

This is a fictional tale about a young man named Shawn, who
visits his uncle, and old mill boss who lived in the woods, making furniture.  After an injury
during a winter storm, he is working hard preparing to effectively and efficiently teach to
Shawn the value of jigs to manufacture and automate things.   Here's a peek...

___________

"Doing more with less."

The Old Man told his apprentice....
"We need precision and efficiency to create a surplus for sure.  Did you see
Old Ben sittin out back?  He's from an old family of European mill operators
and he was my first shop-hand at the mill where I worked."

"His spectacles got real bad after I hired him on, and I can't get him to keep up much
anymore.  He's a good old guy, but he can't process the directions I give um much more.
I promised to take care of um and as long as we're coming up with new products or new
furniture ideas around here he'll have a home.   We need to stay efficient, and  improve our
process.  We need to continue to automate, to make a surplus.  I've been told that that's what made
modern societies different from others.  In a free market you can do the things you need to do.

The Old Man said that..."Enterprise begins with those who become highly
organized, but becoming so is often their last attempt at basic, original automation techniques."

Shawn, I am going to show you what I know, because that old ice storm put me in
a bind.  I use to travel a lot for the old mill, and I realized that you young ones are not
learning even the basics of how to automate.  Everyone teaches widdlin, and carving
or how to carve a knife or make a picture frame.  That's not what enterprise
and automation is about.  This week, I want you to attend a meeting where I
will present a lecture about manufacturing....

When he walked into a classroom full of eager young woodworkers, he knew he
would set there senses ablaze with a sample of things he built.   Read below....

The Old Man could see that the local industrial
suppliers along with production shops struggling....

He was full of ideas and
he felt that it was time to make a visit to friends in local woodshops around Northirst County to discuss
the need for reaching local students. One of the shop owners was also on the County school board
and he insisted upon the old mill boss giving a lecture to a industrial arts class. The event was set, and the
Old Man got prepared to discuss with some very eager students about productivity, and about the possibilities that the county, with a few educational adjustments, was on the brink of economic critical mass. When he
walked into a classroom full of eager young woodworkers, he would first set there senses ablaze with
sample of things he built.

He brought along shelves, chairs, storage units, tables, flower boxes and even
some innovative toys. The event was planned well in advance and it had many new students signing
up for classes when they heard a master woodworker and factory owner was going to give a talk. The
mill boss began to address the new, enterprising youngsters who were sitting on the end of their seats.
Some had arrived an hour early, bringing along notebooks, even sharing pictures of the things they
wanted to produce along with their strange new speaker giving his advice.

After setting up his
presentation, the Old Man began....

Hello, My name is Zack, and that's my nephew Shawn in the front row and we're excited
to relate to you this evening some of the things wrong with my education. We all need to combine our efforts, increase enterprise and continue to restore the economy here in Northirst county.  This reminds me of all the trade clubs I attended decades ago when the economy was booming and jobs were plentiful.  I also hope to give you all an advantage which will help you prevent some mistakes especially concerning manufacturing, for
which many of you, I have heard are excited to hear about.   I have heard that many of you have had
perfect attendance since the beginning, when that new, fully equipped shop was built
by your school.  Your machines are better looking than the ones I started out with.  Everyone shook
their heads and smiled, filled with ambition, and ready to devour every word.  He continued...

It is only the rare few who master the routine often tedious task of planning, and then
building duplication systems and follow up working on mass production methods, which are the
basics of automation and a successful, profitable enterprise.   J
ust because something is mass
produced, doesn't mean it is poor quality.
Quality is determined and pre-established by
your material specifications and design.  I have been told that all of you here are skilled and
ambitious young builders.
"Automation at least the basic duplication process begins with those
who build a neat, organized shop, but unfortunately, they set their goals short.  Most become
casual at making things and don't take the few important steps or procedures.

I plan to transfer many outstanding concepts
this evening, and being so busy, I rarely get this chance to
reflect on the things I have learned, so take advantage of it,
and thanks for coming...

Many in Northirst County got Shawn's Uncle to help them out over the years.
He told Shawn a quote once in the shop that applies to productivity, and it's from
a modern day Science Fiction writer.  He said that "People can almost live longer
without food than without information. Without information, things would be senseless."
He added that most people are concerned with collecting machines and nice tools, and
they don't venture much further and expand their horizons."

Aggregate demand....In economics, the aggregate demand is..

When your working with expensive machines, and exotic wood, you need a method.
Your time and money becomes a matter of....... "techniques or consequences."

Quality is determined by the material, and the design, not by
being mass produced in a free market.
