"About Ingenious Machines and Methods"

With so many difficult to interpret
books on the subject of
manufacturing, I have decided to write my own. I will say,  I have read a few
authors who generously tried to cover the subject, and did quite well. But few of the  scholars knew the subject from the point of view of an engineer, machinist,  or tool maker. Therefore, after extensive volumes written by journalists, scholars,  and historians on the subject, none discovered what they were searching for.  Many were searching for how technology is passed on.  How secret techniques, craftsmanship and methods survive and transfer.

For example, our history books rarely define the actual root, the foundation, or the precise individual
involved in the mechanical domination of the world by Britain in the 1700's. The subject still escapes
even the most astute historians and writers on the subject.  I have documented in laymen's, everyday,
easy to understand terms, the events, people, places, and books, that enabled England to seize and to grasp
the concept of mass production. You will understand why the new science and discoveries
separated people from their former, obsolete craftsman methods, tradition, and rigid creed.

This may be the reason why this history has been so interesting and so elusive to so many
people. New manufacturing concepts not only brought wealth and prosperity, but they eventually
instilled an atmosphere of confidence and optimism to the whole of England, and then America and the
rest of the industrial world. Some think it was a group from Middle England, some think it was steam and
water power, or trains. These are all factors, but they are insignificant compared to what is all revealed in
this book. Here is one hint: These two friends knew that politics, sentiment and public opinion suppressed industrial and economic and technological progress.  One was an inventor, and the other was a scholar.
They were both major contributors to the mechanics of the 1700's.

So, where does someone begin their research , or industrial archeology? What is recommended?
Many of these solutions are offered.  Much of our history previous to our current economic downswing
has been very disconnected. It has always been available, unfortunately, it has been confused, and
incoherent. Bits of our true history is scattered among millions, even billions of essays, reports, novels,
manuals, and research papers.

"Training, and classes are not always a solution.  People need
historical inspiration. They are removed of the details of industry
that are rarely mentioned." Read how many mechanics learned their
history hundreds of years ago.

Is technology and highly refined skills really too obscure and unobtainable?
When will all of the searching for information, and history end?  It will probably never end, because
history and technique book writers have been ignored by the conglomerate book companies.  Many
book publishers also find little interest in enterprising, business related material.  They
want other kinds of books.
When will the answers begin to appear? If you would like
to know much of the history, the correlations and parallels of our
industrial society then read....

Below are a few things mentioned in a recent  petition from NAMS:

"Manufacturing is the engine that drives
American prosperity. It is as central to our economic
security as it is to our national security." "Since July 2000, manufacturing has lost 2.7 million jobs.
Output is experiencing its slowest recovery from a recession in more than 80 years."

"Every $1.00 in manufactured goods generates an additional $1.43 worth of additional economic activity more than any other economic sector."

The National Association of Manufacturers really gets it. They understand how everything in the economy and politics is, and always has been applied to manufacturing and trade.  IMM  describes the people, and how they  knew this 300 years ago.

  "Ingenious Machines and Methods"
is about the remarkable history of Tools
Machines, Crafts,  Educational, Government and more.  It is like a "Grand Tour."  One
chapter of the book deals with Artist  Licensing. One trade show I attended in New York
City awhile back was very interesting.  Inside the Javits Center, which is a huge Convention
Center in downtown Manhattan, they held a Licensing Show. What is a licensing show? It is an
obscure method of finding products,  used by manufacturers. It is where manufacturers from
around the world go to New York City to purchase the rights, or "adopt an idea" created by
an artist, in order to manufacture coasters, food trays, books, ceramics, clothes,  and hundreds
of other kinds of goods.  See IMM...Chap 1.

~ More facts ~

Just recently Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University
of Tampere in Finland said
"Research says that intelligence is
the largest factor behind economic success."

Prices go up, and manufacturing  jobs go away.
Taxes go up.....Utility costs go up....Health care goes up....Traffic tickets increase.....
State taxes rise because of job loses ....The source of all of these problems can be laid directly in
correlation with the lose of our tax base created by manufacturing jobs.
Like stated above by the
Professor Emeritus of Political Science
"intelligence is the largest factor"

"Training, and classes are not always a solution.  People need
historical inspiration. They are removed of the details of industry
that are rarely mentioned." Read how many learned their
history hundreds of years ago.

Read  IMM, and find out more proof and wisdom
from an historical view.  Many scholars throughout history
have made statements concerning the  necessity
of making, and trading goods.  Read who the scholars were,
and who were the engineers that faced the challenges.
