An optimized system is all about "Making things on the fly."
Some like to produce a few things from wood.....other, well, more than that.

The loss of manufacturing was not all because of outsourcing.  Building an operation had almost become a vague knowledge. Although some may not perceive it as so, jigs and gauges are like tools: considered as capital.  Some became only familiar with machines but then went beyond the initial broad skills required to make things only by hand, trying to eliminate more waste to allow for more volume....  George....

Building jigs....will become an issue?

Tool Box Plan

Tool Box Plan

Not a breeze to make for everyone,  but here's a tool chest made from this woodworking plan.  As you know, this website is all about jigs and techniques.  TIP... make more than one at a time.  Strive towards a system, using jigs.....then while you have the jigs, make 5 chests in the time it takes to make just a few!  Jigs are the key.  Read more in the e- book   What's a Jigmaker do?

Jigs reduces waste, and produce perfect fitting parts, cutting out too much expensive
hand work, mistakes and hassles. Jigs are portable, and can be built or even moved throughout
your  operation. This is how interchangeable systems work, using component, assembly, and
finishing. It is how every volume shop works. Even when you are using fine woods, the need for
gauging is even be more necessary unless you are extremely skilled. Gauges and jigs
goof-proof everything.   This is what "might" require jigs, templates, and gauges.
Read "Jigs for Beginners"......

_____________

The Old Man said, "Read Jigs for Beginners,
poke a stick at it, go ahead and you'll see where my woodworking talents
were really honed."  Shawn thanked the Old man for the book and when he read it; it
was like a wall of granite bricks fell on him.  "It was as though my ears were broken before.
Machines never looked the same again. Most people spend and spend, and they ignore the
techniques that
machines were built for."

Industry needs to see things in a different way!

The end of ordinary information
may now near for some. The run of the mill technical books and home shop information are fine,
but readers are indicating the need to raise the bar. Industry might need to see things in a different
way and "Jigs for beginners" is an example of a "Great" start. In the battle against dwindling
industries, lack of skills and outsourcing, it's proven: we need new information to enable new
crafters, woodshop owners, even students to manufacture things in volume.

The e-books are now available for those with an abundance of tools but who are looking for
more insight, clarity and professional techniques. "Jigs for Beginners" is about a subject that
has been ignored, or has been too complicated until now. You often don't need the greatest tools, just
great insight, great information, easy clarity and a whole new way to look at your machines.

Up to snuff?

Everyone expects you to be "up to snuff."
This information can be the difference between holding your own with machines and tools, and
being clueless about
woodshop jigs,  fixtures, and manufacturing things. It has a little history,
some discussion of gauging, using precision tools,  wood shop and table saw "must haves."
It even has a plain spoken explanation of measuring, (with micrometers, and calipers) repairing a jig,
and  more.
Even after hundreds of years of mass producing things in high volume, few people
will explain exactly what manufacturing  entails. For the most skilled, the techniques are a
natural occurrence, and few even think about the core principles, or the
key methods or requirements.  This makes it difficult for the Newbie's, and that
is why this book has been written: to go back to the basics.

More about woodworking jigs

Some say picks and shovels built the modern world....
Well, jigs and shovels (and precision instruments) were the real lever.

An optimized system is all about "Making things on the fly."
Some like to produce a few things from wood.  But a robust economy needs a few to reach the next stage, and produce a few things in greater volume.  That requires knowing about jigs.

From the E-book "The Northirst Student"

The Old boss was telling Shawn about how jigs put him on the map.  "Shawn, come on over here.  People seem to have maps and plans mixed up.  Some rarely read the instructions.  Have you ever heard your Mom joke that men will seldom look at a map?"  "Son, maybe it's true that some never look at maps,  maybe not, but it's not their direct  fault.  It might be their lack of time or priority or something.  A few of the whittlers in my days were not map readers.  So, I soon discovered that it's normal to rarely think that mistakes will never happen, or for many to think that mistakes really do waste time.  Some people just don't forecast problems as well.

He said " I remember where I came from...a little whittler like you. It's not always safe to think we aren't gonna make mistakes."

Grasshopper,  "Most people think of a plan as in "Free plan" or an ordinary plan describing all of the parts of a certain piece of furniture. I used them types of plans, but then I followed a production plan, an operating plan.  Some would call it an operating,  production plan, not just one describing the size and shape of the parts of a chair or table.   With an operation plan you can be more predictable and then have more volume using certain jigs to establish a small,  state of art  operation.   Shawn, next week I will show more about an operating plan,  and in the mean time, finish up the material about the intro to jigs."

The Old Man may have been describing what he learned from using a jig like the Mascut.  The Mascut is like a machining center. And, the book called "Jigs and Gauges for Beginners" explains how jigs work too. But, with the Mascut and the book, it won't be long before somebody reaches a whole new stage.... With the right guide, you can forecast better, be more predictable and of course make more volume on a table saw.

6'' Fractional Digital Caliper
When it comes to measuring stock, fitting precise joints and setting up machines, a digital caliper is one of the handiest tools to have around. This one reads in convenient fractions so you don’t have to memorize decimal equivalents or make conversions in your head. Unlike most fractional calipers, which read in 1/64ths, this one reads in 1/128ths for maximum precision. Best of all, you can switch from fractions to decimals to millimeters with just the push of a button. Ultra-smooth sliding action allows you to dial in your setting quickly, then lock it down with the knurled knob. Measures inside, outside, depth and steps. Includes pre-installed battery, spare battery and padded plastic case.

What's wrong with saving wood?  Be precise....

Some people might find it convenient to use a height gauge.
They are especially handy when working with jigs, and making certain
types of tool chests.  First, lay out where to make certain cuts, then check your
cuts with calipers.  Rockler carries them both now.

Digital Height Gauge
Enjoy the rewards of precisely fitting joints and perfectly tuned machines! This multi- purpose gauge is accurate to within 0.001". It can be used to set the exact height of your blade or bit on the table saw, router table and a host of other machines. You can raise the gauge to the desired height and raise the blade to match, or you can set the caliper on the bit and raise it until the display reads the correct height. It’s also an ideal tool for leveling the knives and setting the depth of cut on your jointer. Heavy, solid steel base provides maximum stability. Changes from inches to millimeters and zeroes out with the push of a button.
