Wouldn't it be great for beginners to learn to use some shop tools safely?

For example, a table saw has enormous potential. A table saw is just another machine unless we understand that
we can make some modifications and it becomes much more.

Just look at the camera for example. For over a hundred years a camera was limited to a roll of film and weeks to process the film. Now, after people wanting more practical products, almost every cell phone is equipped with a camera and thousands of new products and ideas have followed. Now we have the Iphone. Invention begins by introducing the technology and then making advancements.

There is a lot that can be safely taught to young engineers about a table saw for instance. Maybe then someone will improve or revolutionize another machine, or another piece of equipment which nobody ever imagined. Kids can’t come up with ideas unless they become familiar with the equipment, with tools and machines. Then new ideas begin to happen.

There has been a rise in books and information for beginners and students recently. We can further productivity by knowing a few things, and demonstrating them to kids early. What most don’t know is that we can turn some basic machines into a "Swiss army knife" of creativity and production. Then when students realize that they can create more, build jigs, enhance and modify things, they become engineers. Who knows how many new ideas are then brought to the market?

So, with adult supervision, kids can discover that they can become productive. Instead of having a Kool-Aid stand, they can make things from wood. Not only from wood, but they can match things with plastic or metal and become young engineers. Then they can sell a few things at a craft fair for example.

Just remember, a machine can be dangerous for an unsupervised child. But, just like teaching them hunting, skateboarding or showing them fireworks, or driving a lawn mover or tractor, they need to have an extra measure of safety advice to prevent accidents. The real problem is that many schools have ceased the educational trades because of funding and safety issues, so a few resourceful Mom’s, Dad’s or even Uncles now need to demonstrate how to do some things.

This summer or next, why not show some tools and tricks to a young engineer in the shop. Explaining to them
about using jigs is a great starting point.
